Like tens of thousands of other Florida homeowners, imprisoned former football star O.J. Simpson is in danger of losing his house to foreclosure.

Miami-Dade Circuit Court records show that JPMorgan Chase filed for foreclosure in September on the four-bedroom, four-bath house south of downtown Miami. Simpson’s attorney has since filed a motion to dismiss the case, but there has been no further action since November. Simpson bought the 4,233-square-foot house in 2000 for $575,000, property records show. Its current assessed value is $478,401, with property taxes of about $9,000. The 2011 taxes were paid in December.

audioace asked you:

I am a biology student right now. I have only looked at a few posts here, so I apologize if you have answered this question before. What kind of advice would you give someone who is struggling to make a decision about his/her major in college?

Eventually I am going to write up a “go-to” post for this. This post is not that post.

Listen, the idea of a college “major” is just terrifying. I mean, they even go ahead and call it a “major” so as to attach even MORE importance to it that you already give it. I’m gonna go at this in two parts:

You aren’t going to realize this until much later, like when you’re old and wise and post-collegiate like me, but your major is not as important as you think. I mean, it’s still important. Good luck with those Sanskrit Poetry Studies degrees and all, but it should be meaningful and translate into some future endeavor. But it doesn’t define you. Physics majors can write amazing essays on the anthropology of human warfare. Business students can offer incredible and fresh perspectives on how to innovate genomic medicine purely based on numbers. Think of your major as a focus, and not the definition of your college career.

Always search for ways to apply your other interests to the focus you choose. Take advice from your adviser, not mandates. Try many things, because above all you’ll never know your taste for something until you take a bite. “Variety is the spice of life” and all those page-a-day calendar platitudes. If you work at getting good at just one subject, you’ll one day discover that not only are you not the best person in the world at that subject, but because you ignored all the other ones, you’re the worst at all those too.

When you walk across the stage at whatever graduation ceremony you have at your school. everyone who walks with you will have a degree just like yours, on equally underwhelming paper with equally fake signatures. If it’s a ceremony for just your major, their degrees will be exactly like yours. Your major is just the minimum number of steps to take to leave college. It’s actually very minor. Think of ways to make yourself unique from all those other degrees being handed out.

The world doesn’t hire degrees, it hires people. Be a people. Also, biology is pretty cool, if you have to pick one.

Finally, the most important piece of advice I ever received about college majors and knowing stuff and all that: Always treat every room as if there’s someone in there smarter than you about whatever it is that you are doing. Chances are that it’s true. And if it’s not, just wait until you get to the next room.

Here’s my Monday post, this one is an oldie I did for Aspen Comics’ Pinup issue. I chose Cannon Hawke and Akiko (who were the main characters in the book Fathom: Cannon Hawke which was my first mini series ever) I really wanted to do more of a fun summer time theme than sexy swimsuit thing so I went with the Santa Monica promenade scene, and at the time I was obsessed with Corgi’s so I had to put one in. Also my friend Micah Gunnell and I had a thing where we would draw each other in our books so this is what I did along with Koi Turnbull and I in the background.

If you are in New York tomorrow night (or at any point between now and December 20th) you should come see this show at Stadium, a new exhibition space in Chelsea, featuring incredibly strong work by four contemporary artists: Steve Bishop, Christopher Chiappa, Ben Schumacher, and Timur Si-Qin, two of whom (Bishop and Si-Qin) are making their New York debuts.

On a personal note, the show was curated by Nicolas Djandji, one of the most genuinely intelligent, creative, insightful, and generally wonderful people I’ve ever known. He spent the better part of the summer working on putting this show together and thinking up future programming for Stadium, with the goal of helping to create a platform for discourse on contemporary culture through exhibitions, conversations, and events, as opposed to simply a place to view art. In September, Nic was killed in a cycling accident in Williamsburg, two months before his 25th birthday (which was yesterday.) Though he died without ever having the opportunity to see his show fully realized, I’m sure he’d be proud.

Scott Lemieux comments on the Supreme Court’s decision this week in the Maples case about the right to legal counsel:

Surely the right to counsel guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment entails more than being nominally represented by someone who has passed a bar exam somewhere. But Scalia’s defense of the “right” of the state of Alabama to put people to death (even if they’ve never been represented by counsel competent enough or with the necessary resources to properly try a death penalty case) brings up another disturbing precedent set in the 1991 case, Coleman v. Thompson. According to the decision, if Maples’s lawyers missed a deadline because of gross negligence rather than outright abandonment, Maples would have had no legal recourse. The Coleman decision was, as Justice Harry Blackmun wrote in dissent, an example of the Court creating a “Byzantine morass of arbitrary, unnecessary, and unjustifiable impediments to the vindication of federal rights.” In essence, Maples won the right to appeal because the Court recognized that he was at least entitled to legal representation. But had his lawyers just shown up, and done very little else, he would’ve been out of luck. Since the Court’s opinion leaves the Coleman decision undisturbed, it’s unlikely that the Maples case will have much impact going forward.

I highly recommend reading Lemieux’s entire piece over at The American Prospect; it’s not particularly long, but its analysis packs a punch.

After you do, I invite you back here to read my piece on the execution of my friend Ronnie Frye, whose court-appointed attorney was drunk throughout the time that Frye’s was on trial for his life. Having a terrible attorney pretty much amounts to a death sentence and the vast majority of capital defendants can’t afford a lawyer. That we only have the right to an attorney — not a good one, or a sober one, or one who stays awake in court — is a disgrace.

In the meantime, I’ll be over here skimming over hate mails and finding the hypocrisy in being called a miserable, lonely, friendless, immature, ignorant asshole who needn’t worry about using a stroller someday cause I’m undeserving of someone who loves me enough to impregnate me, by people who find deem me mean and judgmental. The good news is, I’m choosing not to take it personally. coughtryitcough. And instead of defending my integrity, intelligence, general understanding of stroller usage, sarcasm, sense of humor, and capacity for human compassion, I’ll simply state my opinion that if literal explanations were applied to every little questionable thing, then nothing in this world would have room to be funny. Sorry Jerry Seinfeld, airline peanut packages are small because planes have limited storage space.
